How I Pack and Ship My Artwork Safely
Packing Artwork
One of the most common questions I hear from collectors is: “How do you ship your paintings safely?”
It’s an important question — and one that matters a lot to me. Whether you’ve purchased a small panel or a large canvas, every artwork deserves to arrive secure, damage-free, and ready to brighten its new home.
In this post, I’m sharing my step-by-step art packaging guide — the exact process I use to pack and ship artwork safely.
1. First Protection Layer
Every painting is wrapped in a moisture-resistant layer with cellophane wrap. This keeps dust, humidity, and surface scuffs away.
2. Bubble Wrap Cushion
The wrapped artwork is then carefully covered in bubble wrap, taped snugly to cushion it from bumps along the way.
3. Sturdy Front & Back Panels
To prevent punctures or pressure damage, I secure protective boards to the front and back of the piece. Depending on the painting size, I use foam core board or corrugated cardboard.
This step adds a dense shield that protects the canvas beyond what bubble wrap alone can do.
4. Reinforced Corners
The edges and corners get extra care. I tape reinforced corners over the new “box shape” created by the boards. Corners are often the most vulnerable part of a painting in transit, so this step is key.
5. Final Bubble Wrap
The entire bundle is wrapped in another layer of bubble wrap for extra security. Think of it as a soft protective shell.
6. Sturdy Shipping Box
Everything goes into a heavy-duty cardboard box, often the kind used for shipping TVs or mirrors. Adjustable boxes work best for larger works, and I source mine from places like Home Depot, U-Haul, or Uline.
Make it stand out
7. A Note on Sustainability 🌱
Whenever possible, I reuse and recycle packaging materials — not just to keep costs lower, but also to reduce waste. If you order a painting from me, there’s a good chance the box or bubble wrap has been repurposed with care.
8. Why It Matters
Professional packaging services exist, but they can be very costly. By taking the time to pack each piece myself, I’m able to:
Save on shipping costs for collectors
Ensure the painting is handled with care from studio to doorstep
Add a personal touch to the journey of the artwork
9. From the Studio
When you order a painting, my goal is simple: that the first time you open the box, the piece looks just as vibrant and alive as it did in my studio.
FAQs About Shipping Artwork
What is the best way to ship a canvas painting?
The safest method is to wrap it in moisture protection, add bubble wrap, reinforce with boards, protect the corners, and pack it in a heavy-duty box.
Can I order prints instead of originals?
Yes! Prints are available through Fine Art America. An 8x10 print costs about $17 plus $15 delivery — an easy way to enjoy art at home.
Do you ship internationally?
Yes — I ship paintings worldwide, each one carefully packaged using the method above so it arrives safe and secure. Please note that shipping outside of Canada or the U.S. will include additional costs.
✨ Whether you’re a collector bringing home your first piece or adding to your collection, I want the unboxing experience to feel just as special as the art itself.
