Commissioned Paintings: What Collectors Should Know
One of the questions I hear from collectors from time to time is:
Painting in it’s home.
“Do you accept commissions, and how much does a custom painting cost?”
While most of my paintings are created as part of ongoing collections and exhibitions, I occasionally open a limited number of spots for commissioned paintings.
A commissioned piece can be a meaningful way to capture something personal — a memory, a place you love, or a moment connected to water and swimming. Because custom artwork involves additional planning and collaboration, the process works a little differently than purchasing an available painting.
Current Commission Availability
At this time, I am not accepting new commissions.
The next commission openings are expected to occur after the summer of 2027.
Because most of my studio time is dedicated to developing new collections and preparing exhibitions, I only accept a limited number of commissions when my schedule allows.
If you would like to hear when new commission spots open, joining my email list is the best way to stay informed.
How Commission Pricing Works
Commission pricing is based on the size of the canvas using a square-inch structure. This approach keeps pricing consistent across different painting sizes while reflecting the time and complexity involved in larger works.
Commission Price Guide
Small works — $3.20 / sq in
Medium works — $2.15 / sq in
Large works — $1.85 / sq in
XL works — $1.60 / sq in
| Size | Sq In | Price / Sq In | Commission Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 11×14 | 154 | $3.21 | $495 |
| 12×12 | 144 | $3.19 | $460 |
| 16×20 | 320 | $3.20 | $1,025 |
| 18×24 | 432 | $2.15 | $930 |
| 24×24 | 576 | $2.15 | $1,240 |
| 24×30 | 720 | $2.15 | $1,550 |
| 30×36 | 1,080 | $1.85 | $2,000 |
| 30×40 | 1,200 | $1.85 | $2,220 |
| 36×48 | 1,728 | $1.85 | $3,200 |
| 60×48 | 2,880 | $1.60 | $4,600 |
Larger canvases allow the movement of water and light to unfold more naturally in the composition, which is why many collectors choose sizes between 24×24 and 36×48.
The Planning Stage
Each commission begins with a planning conversation.
The first hour of video-based reference image planning is included in the commission price. During this session, we review potential references, discuss the direction of the painting, and begin shaping the composition.
Additional planning time beyond the first hour is billed at $40 per hour.
This stage helps ensure the painting begins with a clear vision and strong references.

Artistic Interpretation
While I work with collectors during the planning stage to clarify ideas and references, the finished painting reflects my artistic interpretation and studio process.
Reference images are used as inspiration rather than exact replication.
Contracts and Project Timelines
Each commission includes a written contract and a clear project timeline.
Final Painting
The contract outlines expectations for both artist and collector, including payment terms, timeline, and delivery details. This structure helps ensure the process remains transparent and comfortable for everyone involved.
What Types of Commissions I Accept
I only accept commissions that are a strong fit with my existing body of work.
Most of my paintings explore themes connected to water, swimming, memory, and meaningful personal experiences. Requests that fall outside my established style or subject matter are typically declined so that the work remains authentic to my practice.
Not every commission request will be accepted.
Considering a Commission?
For many collectors, purchasing from my available paintings is often the most straightforward and cost-effective option.
Available work is already completed, which means it can usually be delivered sooner and typically costs less than a commissioned piece.
If you connect with a painting that already exists, I always encourage collectors to start there. Many people discover that the right painting is already waiting.
Commission Inquiries
When commission bookings reopen, inquiries will be accepted by email only.
Requests should include:
• preferred painting size
• a short description of the idea
• relevant reference photos
Collectors on my email list will be the first to hear when new commission spots become available.
Why Artists Limit Commissions
Many collectors are curious why artists only open commission spots occasionally.
Limiting commissions helps protect the time needed for studio work and new collections.
