10 Tips for New Art Collectors (or Anyone Who Loves Art)
If you're new to collecting art, you're not alone—and you're in the right place. Many people are curious about how to start collecting art but feel unsure about where to begin or whether it’s affordable. The truth? You don’t need a massive budget or an art history degree. You just need curiosity, connection, and a few helpful tips.
Whether you’re decorating your space, supporting local artists, or starting a meaningful collection, here are 10 beginner-friendly tips to help you feel more confident in your journey.
1. Start with What You Love
Art is deeply personal. Choose what emotionally resonates with you, not just what matches your decor. This creates a lasting connection with the piece—and your collection becomes a reflection of you.
2. Original Doesn’t Mean Expensive
Collecting original art can be more accessible than many people think. I offer a range of work at different price points to make starting your collection feel approachable. For example, prints begin at $30, original works on paper start around $120, and smaller canvas paintings start at $220.
I don’t offer payment plans or maintain a vault collection, but you're always welcome to explore what’s available in the shop. Beginning with one meaningful piece is a great way to start your collection—and every purchase directly supports my practice as an artist.
3. Ask the Artist Questions
Knowing the story behind the work adds meaning and helps you understand what makes each piece unique. Most artists are happy to talk about their process, materials, and inspiration—it’s a great way to feel more connected to the piece you’re collecting.
In my case, my pieces are inspired by my love of swimming. I’ve been lane swimming on the weekends for over 15 years, and it’s one of the few spaces where I feel calm, clear, and fully present. The water is where I recharge—physically, mentally, and creatively. It’s also time I get to myself, which feels increasingly rare and valuable.
Most of my paintings are done on canvas using acrylic paint. I build up the image in multiple layers to capture the feeling of being underwater—where colors shift, blur, and shimmer all at once. That layering gives the work depth and motion, mimicking the way water bends light. Once complete, I finish each piece with a protective varnish to enhance the colors and ensure long-term durability.
If you’re curious about a specific painting, feel free to ask. A simple question like:
“What inspired this piece?”
“How did you create the layered effect?”
can lead to a meaningful connection—not just with me, but with the artwork itself.

4. Think Beyond the Living Room
Art doesn’t have to be reserved for common areas. Bedrooms, hallways, bathrooms, and kitchen nooks can benefit from thoughtfully placed pieces—and create surprising moments of beauty throughout your day.
5. Framing Makes a Difference
Framing enhances presentation and protects the piece. A well-chosen frame can elevate the look of your art, make it feel complete, and help it stand out in your space.
You can visit a local framing shop for custom support, or order frames online from Canadian retailers who offer quality options at great prices.

7. Art is an Investment in Joy
Art enriches your environment emotionally, not just visually. Whether it brings calm, energy, nostalgia, or a sense of connection, a meaningful piece can become part of your everyday life—and that’s something worth investing in.
8. Learn How to Care for Your Art
Direct sunlight, humidity, and improper handling can damage artwork over time. Learning how to care for original art—like keeping it out of damp spaces and avoiding harsh light—will help with protecting your artwork so it lasts for years to come.
9. Track Your Collection
Keep a simple log of your purchases: title, artist name, date, and a note about what drew you to it. This helps preserve the story behind each piece and is useful for moving, insuring, or passing your collection along in the future.
10. You Are Already a Collector
If you’ve bought one piece of art that you love, you’re a collector. There’s no gatekeeping here—just follow your interest and keep discovering what speaks to you.
